Norbeck Upper Trail
About 4 miles east of the small tunnel on the upper Needles Highway is the upper trailhead for the Norbeck Trail (Trail 3 in the Black Hills). Though the entire Norbeck Trail is rated overall as intermediate-to-strenuous, the first two miles up the trail toward Black Elk Peak is actually moderately easy as it follows the course of Iron Creek. The trail passes through thick forests of spruce, pine, aspen and birch as it follows the course of Iron Creek. The trail becomes more strenuous when it leaves its course parallel to Iron Creek and begins to ascend the lower slopes of Black Elk Peak. However, the first two miles of the trail make a beautiful hike for those desiring a hike in the easy to moderate range. For hikers who want to go further, the Black Elk Wilderness Trails Map shows route options and distances, plus gives a description of each trail.
